GOALS / 002 [WHAT SHOULD YOU THINK ABOUT WHEN THE PRESSURE IS ON?]

Question
Under pressure, is it better to focus on technical details or on the feel of the whole movement?

Study
24 male students with no experience played a racing simulation with a steering wheel and pedals over three days. They were randomly given one of three focus cues: "smooth turns" (the feel of the whole movement), "outside hand" (one technical detail), or no cue at all. On days one and two they practised. On day three they were tested on what they had learned, and then again under pressure.

Findings
During practice there was no clear difference: every group got faster. But on day three, the "smooth turns" group drove faster laps than the "outside hand" group, both in the learning test and under pressure. There was no difference in the number of mistakes, and the group without a cue did not clearly differ from the others.

What It Means for Athletes
When the pressure rises, thinking about one technical detail can break up a movement that should run automatically. A single cue that captures the feel of the whole movement seems to hold up better. This was a proper experiment, but small, with a racing game instead of a real sport, and the pressure only raised nerves a little.

Try this: pick one word that captures the feel of your key skill, like "smooth", "tall" or "loose". Use it in training, and use that same word in pressure moments instead of running through a technical checklist.
